The Thames (from London Bridge, Arizona to Sheerness, Canada), by Layla Curtis
Commissioned by The Cultureship
Artist Layla Curtis examined sea charts, past and present as well as maps of the landscape between the Pool of London at London Bridge and Sea Reach at the mouth of the river, to create an original artwork; an alternative map of the Thames.
Focusing on researching the etymology of place names along the river’s shores and tracing their global namesakes, she created an artwork that presents new geographical fictions as well as reflecting the history and far-reaching influence of the Thames.
The final piece was available to download for free, in 10 parts over the Thames Festival 2013.
